Radiant cooling is a cooling technology that works by using a chilled surface to absorb the heat radiated by objects in a room, such as people or furniture. Unlike traditional air conditioning, which cools the air in a room, radiant cooling directly cools the objects in the room, resulting in a more comfortable and energy-efficient cooling experience.
Radiant cooling is a constant battle between the radiant surface temperature and the dew point temperature within an environment. The dew point represents the critical threshold at which condensation begins to form; so, the radiant surface temperature must be kept above the dew point to avoid condensation.
To overcome this challenge, Messana Hydronic Technologies spent several years dedicated to the development of advanced sensors and controls that could be used to manage a radiant cooling and heating system.
Messana’s Controls can now be used alongside WBI radiant panels to ensure optimal radiant floor cooling performance while avoiding condensation.
To ensure that the radiant surface temperature never falls below the dew point temperature, Messana Controls utilize mSense room comfort sensors to monitor operative temperature, relative humidity, and volatile organic compounds.
Operative temperature and relative humidity readings are used to determine the dew point temperature and the VOC measurement reveals the environment’s indoor air quality.
By monitoring the dew point temperature within an environment, Messana Controls can adjust the radiant surface temperature as needed to avoid condensation. Additionally, Messana Controls can activate forms of dehumidification, which lowers the environment’s dew point temperature, allowing the radiant system to operate at a lower surface temperature, increasing cooling output.
